A slight shift from in-class schooling is set to be the topic of discussion on the upcoming Ed Tech Mondays episode, which focuses on out-of-school youth in Ethiopia. As Ethiopia continues to navigate a myriad of challenges, increasingly pushing students outside of regular classes, technology presents an opportunity to ameliorate the effects. The monthly show produced by Shega Media and Technology in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation assembles industry insiders for insights and potential paths forward.
Recent reports have indicated that just in Amhara Regional State, a staggering 60% of school age children are attending classes in 2025. Pockets of other regional states, which have also been subject to episodes of conflict, have experienced massive lapses in school attendance. EdTech has the potential to address this issue by offering flexible, accessible, and personalized learning solutions that address their unique circumstances. Yet, many out-of-school youth are hindered by limited access to devices, unreliable internet connectivity, or a lack of guidance in handling digital tools.
Edtech tools can also become an alternative for schooling in parts of Ethiopia bearing the brunt of worsening effects from climate change. Furthermore, children who have been left aside by the schooling system due to harmful cultural practices can also be reached with technology-based education tools. To overcome challenges of infrastructure, structured support systems are essential, including community learning hubs, affordable internet access, and mentorship programs that guide youth in navigating digital platforms. Additionally, EdTech solutions should be designed with simplicity and relevance in mind, ensuring they align with the learners' goals, whether academic, vocational, or skill based. By combining EdTech with community-driven initiatives, partnerships with local organizations, and targeted policy interventions, it can create inclusive pathways for out-of-school youth to re-engage with education, develop critical skills, and unlock opportunities for personal and professional growth.
