beU delivery, an on-demand food delivery service in Ethiopia, is expanding its services to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The expansion comes after beU completed a two-million-dollar seed funding, following its completion of an acceleration program at Y Combinator, an American technology startup accelerator.
beU, which is currently recruiting team members in Dar es Salaam, the largest city and financial hub of Tanzania, also plans to break ground in Uganda soon.
Founded by Hao Zheng, beU started its operation in Ethiopia in 2021 and offers fast bike door-to-door deliveries from restaurants and grocery stores with low delivery prices in the market. Hao, who also leads the team as chief executive, was the founder and CEO of Yooul, a social networking app in China.
In a short time, beU has become one of Ethiopia’s biggest food delivery platforms in terms of market share. Its riders, who wear bright orange-colored uniforms, are seen everywhere on the streets of Addis.
beU has several restaurants on its platform, including small neighborhood restaurants, enabling users to order food not only from high-end restaurants but also from their affordable down-the-street restaurants, where prices go as low as 80 birr.
Capitalizing on these factors, beU hopes these factors will enable it to unlock new markets, reach a larger population, and turn a profit from mass orders. beU has over 100,000 downloads on Google Play.
beU plans to expand its services to new markets and eventually become a super APP in Africa, as well as cover online-to-offline (O2O) services ( a business strategy designed to bring potential customers from online channels to physical stores).
