2020 seem to be a interesting time for Ethiopian startup and innovation scene. It’s February and we have already witnessed big acquisition and various funding rounds. In this edition of Shega weekly we look at the major stories between Jan 27 – Feb 9.

 

Dashen Bank ‘Ethiopia Talent Power Series’

Dashen Bank’s initiative called ‘Ethiopian Talent Power Series’ launched back in December is now touring around the country and providing trainings for youths who want to start there own business. This 100 Million birr initiative is aimed at encouraging job creations, providing financial support  to talented individuals and reducing unemployment.

Dashen started providing entrepreneurship and business skill training in Hawasa and Adama. The training will continue in other cities like Dire Dawa, Addis Abeba, Mekele and Bahirdar.

The trainings takes five days in each city and at the end ‘Dashen Business Club’ is being established. Dashen aims to provide seed funding from 100,000 to 500,000 ETB.

 

RIDE Is adding Duka Security System On It’s Participating Vehicles

Duka provided by Horizon express is a GPS tracking system, designed for car and motorcycle surveillance, to enhance driver safety, fleet management and anti-theft security will be installed on vehicles who are part of Ride. Read more here.

 

Ethio Telecom Network Upgrade in Addis Abeba

Ethio Telecom, a sole Telecom Service provider in Ethiopia,has launched LTE Advanced 4G (Fourth Generation) technology. Ethio Telecom said they expanded the existing limited 4G LTE network coverage throughout Addis Ababa.

The LTE Advanced mobile internet service is availed in areas around Bole Airport, Bole Friendship, Bole Medhanialem, Bole Atlas, Meskel Square, Stadium, Ethio telecom Headquarters, Kazanchis, 4 Kilo (Unity Park), 6 Kilo, Lideta (ECX), African Union, and Old Airport based on the high level of internet usage trend.

Ethio Telecom says the LTE-Advanced service offers a high speed an equivalent of 4 times faster speed than the existing 4G LTE service. After the launch some customers were reporting an internet speed as high as 100 MBS.

 

TaskMoby Joined Youth Impact Jobs

Taskmoby, Ethiopia based on demand service platform that connects customers with home services providers, joined Youth Impact Jobs as the partner. Youth Impact Jobs is an initiative that is supported by google.org and ‘identifies and tests creative, technology-enabled solutions to tackle global youth unemployment, accelerating job’.

TaskMoby join other 9 other tech innovators in East Africa, who are creating job opportunities for the youth!

 

National Market Information System provided market information for 100,000 farmers

Agricultural Transformation Agency ( ATA ) lead initiative helped over 100,000 farmers to obtain market information within the past eight months.

According to Temesgen who spoke to The Ethiopian Herald , the system is devised to make the market information simple and transparent for farmers and customers as well. The system has also enabled the Agency to set the prices of five different types of crops – haircot bean, sesame, teff, wheat and maize.

Another Initiative of ATA, 8022 hotline, that helps farmers in providing general agricultural information to enhance their knowledge thereby increase agricultural productivity also have a subscriber 4.8 million Farmers and received 40 million calls.

 

Gebeya Secures A Seed Investment of $ 2 Million

Gebeya, Ethiopian based Pan-African EdTech and online software outsourcing Marketplace closed a $ 2 Million seed round.
