Co-working is an arrangement where several workers from different companies share an office space. It allows cost savings and convenience through the use of common space, such as equipment, utilities, receptionist and custodial services, and in some cases, refreshments.

Co-working is a concept that has emerged from the tech space from hackers and developers trying to acquire a space to work just for a few days or hours. Even though it is a concept that has existed since 2005, the business of co-working spaces has grown significantly over the last decade.

It can also be a great place to meet and connect with different people from different lines of work which makes co-working spaces a great opportunity for networking.

Who Uses Co-Working Spaces?

The majority of the users for spaces are start-ups and freelancers. Start-ups prefer co-working spaces because of the flexible arrangements. Another big segment, freelancers, favor the arrangement because they prefer non-structural arrangements.

According to Co-working Resources, the number of co-working spaces worldwide is projected to reach over 40,000 in 2024. With the emergence of the “side hustle” and the rise of flexible and remote work options for many employees, it’s no surprise that co-working spaces are expected to pop up in more and more urban and suburban areas over the coming years.

Addis Ababa welcomed its first co-working space through Iceaddis in May 2011. And now, the city hosts several co-working spaces in different areas.
