Gilat Satellite Networks, a global provider of satellite networking technology, has announced that it has secured a contract to revamp Ethio Telecom‘s satellite network.

Gilat, as part of this agreement, will deploy its SkyEdge II-c platform, Capricorn, and Gemini VSATs (two-way satellite ground stations) to significantly improve satellite-based 4G cellular backhaul capabilities and enhance communications in remote areas across Ethiopia.

Experts state that this modernization project can help Ethio Telecom improve connectivity and communication services for its customers in underserved areas.

According to Sossina Tafari, a telecommunications expert, Gilat’s SkyEdge II-c platform is a next-generation satellite networking solution that offers a wide range of features and benefits, including high performance and scalability to meet the growing demands of 4G and 5G networks.

“Gilat’s Capricorn and Gemini VSATs are high-performance satellite terminals that are designed to deliver reliable and affordable broadband connectivity in even the most challenging environments,” she wrote on LinkedIn.

“As part of our modernization process, we carefully evaluated our options. Gilat’s technology, with its long history of proven satellite-based cellular backhaul experience, proved to be the right choice to enable reliable and efficient mobile connectivity and enterprise communications for Ethiopia,” said Tesfaye Tadesse, Chief Network Infrastructure Officer at Ethio Telecom.
