The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched its annual Innovation Challenge, inviting innovators and entrepreneurs to propose solutions that can improve the lives of people facing food insecurity worldwide.

As part of the WFP Innovation Accelerator, the challenge seeks to identify and support groundbreaking projects with the potential for widespread impact in the fight against hunger. The 2024 challenge prioritizes initiatives co-created with vulnerable communities that have demonstrated early success and market viability.

Successful applicants will receive mentorship, up to $100,000 in equity-free funding, access to a global network, and opportunities to validate their solutions through the WFP Innovation Accelerator.

Akofada (DFS Ethiopia)

WFP hosts multiple Innovation Challenges annually to discover transformative approaches that deliver relief, build resilience, and ultimately eradicate hunger. With over 309 million people facing acute food insecurity across 123 countries in 2024, the need for innovative solutions is more critical than ever. The convergence of conflicts, extreme weather, and economic downturns has exacerbated food crises, making food inaccessible for millions and straining WFP’s resources.

Applicants can either apply to specific challenge topics or submit their projects for ongoing review. All submissions will be considered for future programs. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2024. Interested innovators can apply through the WFP Innovation Challenge website.

Previous winners of the WFP Innovation Challenge include projects like the FaBarley Project from Ethiopia, which is developing wholesome, nutritious food products from fava beans and barley to alleviate child malnutrition and improve dietary diversity.
