The startup ecosystem in Addis Ababa has been ranked 10th in Africa in this year’s Global Startup Ecosystem Index by StartupBlink.
The 2024 index, made public today by the startup ecosystem map and research center, states that Addis Ababa’s startup scene has developed considerably over the past year. “Home to 97% of Ethiopia’s startups, Addis Ababa has a vibrant startup ecosystem that is ranked 328th in the world,” notes StartupBlink.
Addis Ababa also climbed 89 positions globally, securing 328th place among 1,000 cities.
Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia, lost its regional standing in Africa to Addis Ababa, slipping out of the top 10 to rank 11th. Addis Ababa is ranked 4th in East Africa.
The Global Ecosystem Index is a crowdsourced community resource. It lists startups, incubators, accelerators, co-working spaces, and ecosystem leaders worldwide. The map provides a visual database of the global startup ecosystem.
Ethiopia first made it to the list in 2021 with the listing of Addis Ababa and Jimma. However, Jimma has lost its place and is not featured in the 2024 index.
“This year’s index is released in partnership with over 100 government and international organizations, including the UNDP and Siemens. StartupBlink’s global data partners include Crunchbase, Statista, and SEMRush,” said StartupBlink in a press release.
