Food Safety for Africa (FS4Africa) project has launched its first Open Call, inviting African innovators to apply for funding. The initiative targets innovations that are ready to be tested in real-world environments and that can help reduce foodborne illnesses, improve compliance with safety standards, or strengthen traceability in local food systems especially within the informal market.
What’s in It for You
Selected applicants will receive full funding (up to €60,000) to pilot their solution, covering everything from technical development to field testing, stakeholder engagement, and validation. In addition to funding, FS4Africa offers access to expert support, visibility within a European African food safety ecosystem, and opportunities to connect with regulators and market players.
Eligibility
The Open Call is designed for single African entities including startups, SMEs, NGOs, research institutes, and social enterprises working on food safety interventions. Solutions must start at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 (functional prototype) and reach TRL 6 (validated in relevant environment) by the end of the project.
Applicants must demonstrate how their solution will be tested with at least 10 users, include a demonstration event with 30+ stakeholders, and provide a plan for scaling or commercialization.
Food safety remains a critical challenge across African food systems, with a significant proportion of foodborne disease outbreaks linked to informal markets and weak oversight. Issues such as mycotoxin contamination, pesticide residues, microbial hazards, and product adulteration continue to affect health outcomes, especially in low-income communities. FS4Africa was launched to help address this gap through innovation.
