The average mobile internet speed in Ethiopia is ranked 107th globally, according to a report by US-based internet speed analysis firm Ookla
The August 2022 Speedtest Global Index, which surveyed 182 countries, shows that the average mobile download speed in Ethiopia is 26.63 Mbps, while the upload speed is 17.62 Mbps. Neighboring Kenya has an average mobile internet download speed of 31.25 Mbps and is ranked 93 globally.
On the other hand, Ethiopia’s average mobile fixed broadband internet is ranked 148 with 21.95 Mbps.
The Speedtest Global Index rankings are based on average download speed, and the index regularly compares internet speed data from around the world. Data for the Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest.
The report further showed that even South Africa, Africa’s internet speed leader—with an average mobile internet download speed of 68.9 megabits per second (Mbps), is way below the global average mobile download speed of 77.7 Mbps. South Africa takes position 46 globally, and in Africa, it is followed by Togo, Morocco, and Egypt.
The world’s top mobile internet speeds are in Norway, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Qatar, and Bulgaria, with speeds reaching up to 258 Mbps. Singapore is the world leader in fixed broadband internet speed with a speed of 298 Mbps.
