Tech giant Google has announced the expansion of its chatbot Bard to over 180 countries, including Ethiopia. Initially launched in February, Bard was introduced as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT but was only available in a limited number of countries.
With this recent development, Ethiopians with an internet connection can access Bard through its website or app, without needing a VPN. The chatbot also offers Amharic language support for local users.
Bard is a large language model (LLM) developed by Google AI, trained on an extensive dataset of text and code. Although still under development, Bard can already perform tasks such as following instructions, responding to open-ended questions, and generating creative text formats like poems, code, scripts, and more.
The availability of Bard in Ethiopia comes at a time when ChatGPT is inaccessible in many countries, including Ethiopia, providing an opportunity for many to explore this growing field.
