Digital transactions in Ethiopia reached 9.7 trillion birr in the past fiscal year, marking a 129% increase, according to Central Bank Governor Mamo Mihertu. The number of digital accounts across various channels and platforms has also grown to 200 million nationwide.
“Tax, electricity, water bills, traffic fines, and other person-to-government payments are now processed digitally. Similarly, government-to-person payments, including pensions and safety net disbursements, are also conducted via digital platforms,” said the governor speaking to the state-owned news agency ENA.
Mamo added that efforts are underway to expand digital use cases beyond payments to include digital savings, credit, and investment, with the goal of enhancing financial inclusion.
Key initiatives in progress include implementing standardized QR codes, continuing to develop digital infrastructure, and launching the second phase of the National Digital Payment Strategy.
