The state-owned Ethio Telecom has entered the cloud business with Tele Cloud. The new service, which was unveiled today, will enable startups and businesses to meet their cloud service needs at reduced costs.
Ethio Telecom inaugurated a modular data center provided by Huawei in the Gola Sefer area of the capital city last year. The newly built Tier 3 Ready Data Center has 99% reliable connectivity and high electric power saving.
The center was initially built with the main objective of serving Ethio Telecom’s existing services such as Telebirr and business support systems.
Capitalizing on the extra capacity, the data center became a source of revenue as it could be used for businesses that need colocation services. In the same month, Ethio Telecom signed data center leasing service agreements with five financial and internet service provider institutions.
Now, using this infrastructure, Ethio Telecom is expanding its services and will provide Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Iaas), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) for businesses with cloud service needs.
“The new cloud computing service will help companies to get modern services virtually without the need to build data centers and other infrastructures,” said Frehiwot Tamiru, CEO of Ethio telecom.
The expansion of digital platforms has intensified the demand for data centers in Ethiopia. And Ethio Telecom’s venture into cloud computing and going beyond connectivity is part of its new three strategic plan called Lead.
