In the age of the internet and smartphones, dating apps have changed how we find love. For many, the quest for finding a partner has become more accessible, with social media and dating platforms emerging as avenues for discovering potential soulmates.

Globally, several well-known platforms exist. Tinder, the most popular global dating app, has made 55 billion matches to date. Meanwhile, Bumble offers a unique twist, empowering women to initiate conversations.

Ethiopia has also seen a rise in homegrown startups, uniting many couples. Here’s a look at some popular options:

KumNeger

Dedicated to singles, KumNeger connects Ethiopians and Eritreans seeking meaningful relationships, particularly within the diaspora. Users register with a phone number or email and create a profile with a bio and photos. The platform provides daily matches based on user preferences. While free for the first month, a premium option unlocks features like unlimited messaging. With over 100,000 downloads, KumNeger is a growing platform.

Gojo Dating

Gojo connects Ethiopians and Eritreans. Registration is simple, requiring basic details and photos. Whether you seek a long-term relationship, something casual, or anything in between, Gojo caters to diverse preferences. Beyond profiles, Gojo offers a “Discover” section for exploring beyond your usual matches and even provides relationship and marriage consultations. Currently, Gojo has over 5,000 downloads on Play Store.

Ethio Marriage

Launched in August 2023, Ethio Marriage is a marriage-focused Ethiopian dating app that aims to address dating challenges in the modern world while honoring local norms and values.

Users are prompted to provide details such as religion, location, age, education level, profession, HIV test results, height, and their intended timeline for marriage.

Wanting users to be judged by their personality and not looks, Ethio Marriage does not permit photo uploads for profile pictures; instead, users can choose from a selection of avatars.

Jebena

Jebena is an Ethiopian-Eritrean diaspora-focused dating app launched in 2020. Founded by diasporas themselves, Jebena aims to connect Ethiopians and Eritreans living aboard and in the country.

The platform, which is available in both the Play Store and App Store, allows users to register using their phone number and email. The app suggests matches and notifies users about that. People using the platform will get profiles containing information about their matches that will appear on their feeds.

As of April 2024, over 160,000 Ethio-Eritreans have made matches on Jebena.
